The Town of St. Johnsbury received significant rainfall on July 30, 2024, causing substantial flooding and road closures. Town officials opened the local Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 3 am on July 30, 2024. The state of Vermont deployed the Vermont Urban Search and Rescue Task Force and other swift-water teams from around the state to assist with emergency operations. St. Johnsbury rainfall totals report between 4" -8.4" of rainfall. Significant damages and road closures have been reported. 


July 31, 2024, Update:  At 8 am today Town officials reopened the St. Johnsbury Welcome Center at 51 Depot Square to serve as the temporary evacuation shelter. The Red Cross has been notified and are on stand-by.

Damage has been reported at the Town's water treatment plant and staff has temporarily restored the town's ability to produce water with hopes of having the plant fully operational by noon today.


The St. Johnsbury Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has moved into its next phase of emergency response. Clear objectives for the day have been defined and roles and responsibilities assigned. Emergency Management Coordinator Chief Reed has captured these objectives on a standard ICS 202 form, which can be viewed on the Town website at www.stjvt.com.


St. Johnsbury’s Department of Public Works continues to work to repair roads with a priority on damages that have isolated residents from emergency vehicle access. Road updates are available on the Town website at www.stjvt.com under “Announcements”.


Town officials are currently monitoring the weather with more rainfall expected today. Swift-water Teams from around the state are monitoring the situation, and are available to provide support if necessary.

Household Hazardous Waste Days 2026 Collection Events The Town of St. Johnsbury partners with the Town of Burke to offer four Household Hazardous Waste Days. See below for dates and information. St. Johnsbury: Saturday, May 16th and Saturday, September 26th. Burke: Saturday, July 18th, and Saturday, October 17th. All events will be open from 8:30-9 for CEGs* and 9-1 for St.J and Burke residents. *CEGs are Conditionally Exempt small Quantity Generators. These are businesses that generate ~220 pounds of HHW or less per month and generate 2.2 pounds or less of acutely hazardous waste per month.
