Household Hazardous Waste Day

ST. JOHNSBURY /BURKE /HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION ON SEPTEMBER 26, 2026
On Saturday September 26, 2026 from 8 am to 8:30 am 1 pm the, the Town of St. Johnsbury and the Town of Burke, Casella Waste Management, Inc. and the Agency of Natural Resources will be co-sponsoring a Fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. This event will be held at the St Johnsbury Municipal Parking Lot on North Main Street.
So, if you are a resident in the Town of St. Johnsbury or the Town of Burke and have household hazardous waste (HHW) like pool chemicals, solvents and degreasers, oven and drain cleaners, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lamps, old gasoline and paint thinners, you can bring up to 10 gallons of these wastes and all your pesticides, oil based and latex architectural paints and primary batteries at no charge for proper disposal. Beyond the 10 gallons or 10 pounds of solid HHW, there is a $5.00 per unit disposal fee. If you have any mercury thermostats, we will give you a coupon that can be submitted for a $5.00 rebate from the Thermostat Recycling Corporation. The thermostats have to be complete units to qualify for the rebate.
We request that small businesses and institutions which are conditionally exempt small quantity generators of hazardous waste may participate in this event. They should preregister by calling the St. Johnsbury Town Manager’s Office at 802- 748-3926 or John Malter at 802-244-7373 by September 23, 2026 and indicate the type and approximate quantity of waste you are bringing to this event to determine the cost for your disposal. Payment will be due at the time of the collection. These businesses need to be there between 8 and 8:30 am on September 26, 2026 to participate.
While you're at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection, you can visit the paint drop and swap where folks can bring good cans of paint that they don’t need and you can pick these up and use them for your painting tasks. If you have a mercury thermometer, we will swap you for a digital thermometer at the HHW event at no charge. One digital thermometer per family.
As a result of Product Stewardship Legislation dealing with architectural oil and latex paint and primary batteries, we will be able to accept all of this material at no charge during this event. We cannot accept explosives, ammunition, asbestos, propane and other compressed gas cylinders, radioactive or infectious waste, tires or electronic waste. If you are not a resident of St. Johnsbury or Burke there is a $30.00 registration fee and no free disposal of ten additional units of HHW.
